Chances are if you are like most other people (and me in the beginning of my photography biz) then when you think of a large family photo you are thinking of an 11×14. A great wall size right? But seeing is believing and when I saw the example below on a blog I love,, I knew I had to share it. You see, when purchasing a print you love it really needs to fit the space, otherwise you will end up regretting your too-large or too-small print. Which is why custom portraiture is so awesome – I help you determine what will look amazing in the space you chose. I even bring along my trusty tape measure to home shoots to take measurements. This takes the stress of choosing away and makes having a session that much more enjoyable. Take a look below at the sizes and see for yourself how the perfect large print looks…

I come from a large family with three sisters and two brothers and we have always lived in the same area, all attended the same church, had regular huge family dinners at my moms… you get the idea=) However, recently two of my sisters have moved – one to New York and one to England. Soon my two bothers will be moving. After twenty-seven years together it was pretty rough to say goodbye. So one way I chose to cope with it was starting a family blog. Just a place for my family to see what was happening in our day-to-day life. When I started it I had no idea how much I would love it. It doesn’t have beautifully edited pictures, sometimes the background to the pictures is a messy house our outfits don’t coordinate and our hair is usually askew=) – but I love it!
My husband is currently residing our home and we were all outside playing and watching him the other day. This is what came of that – a sheet fort, books and car rides. You get to see how my girls are everyday including the way Arrabella loves to fix her own hair…isn’t it lovely?
Arrabella loved taking Cecelia to see the chickens. I couldn’t hear, but I’m sure she was explaining things like big sisters do when she was sitting on the edge. These girls! Too cute=)
As one of my sisters said, “It is good to have a sister. Starting this whole thing(blog) was worth it just for that one montage. What a thing to have to look back on – for you and then them.”
I couldn’t agree more!

I’m visiting my sister here in New York and was anxious to use the words in her backyard – such cool trees! The boys were loving that I was not posing them and instead telling them to climb trees, chase each other and sword fight. They are anxious to put that sword fight photo up on their wall. Each time I photograph boys it is always sooo different from my little girls – but I think I captured them perfectly. They sure made me run around for it though!![]()

Oh these girls were just downright fun to shoot! And the outfits their mom brought had my head spinning. If fact after they left I kept thinking to myself, “oh we never got around to that other outfit!” These are just a few of my favorites from the session.

I’m having a love affair – with Pintrest that is – just like so many creative people around me (admit it you are addicted too!) Pintrest has a plethora of ideas and inspiration from which to glean and, unfortunately, it is very easy to repin and not so easy to take that inspiration and create your own art.![]()
A few months ago I found myself pinning galore and few of those pins actually changing the world in which I live. Be it an idea for my studio, a new recipe, a hair style or a shoot concept. So, I decided to stop wishing I had exactly what was in the picture and instead take the ideas and concepts to which I was drawn and make them my own.
When I fall in love with an idea now, I look for a few minutes, maybe search for like ideas, and then walk away. I head to my fabric cabinet, craft supplies, or prop stash – sometimes it jumps right out and sometimes I have to mull it over in my head or walk around my house gathering bits and pieces – sometime for a few days. With a vague idea it is much easier for me to create a shoot, craft or outfit that is totally me rather than going back again and again bemoaning the fact that I am not in possession of the exact prop, clothes, location or material that the original creator owned.
I find so much contentment and satisfaction this way…drawing on the creativity of others yet still creating my own unique art.
Enter the April Showers shoot:
I gathered a few ideas on Pintrest and then shut the laptop.
For example, I loved the pop of red in a few of the ideas I pinned so…
I looked and found :
1. red polka dot material
2. a stump from our wood pile
3. a five gallon bucket lid from my husband’s work shop
4. a doily passed down from my grandmother
I screwed the lid to the stump, added some stuffing, glued on fabric and doily – and voila! A totally unique toadstool that I absolutely love! I took an idea and made it my own.
DIY – Rain drops and clouds
Once again I took a concept and walked away. Before, I would often leave the Pintrest board open and compare fabrics and I was never satisfied. By getting a general idea and walking away it gives me the freedom to create.
I chose fabrics that complimented the blues and grays of a rainy day, added a few pops of red and yellow and went to work. I free handed the clouds and rain drops and my daughter helped me choose the order in which to string them. It was fun, easy and such a great creative outlet that made me happy from beginning to end and without a speck of copycat guilt.
If you find yourself in the same position – try walking away from the computer today and don’t just pin – create! I’d love to hear what you are creating.
a great print found here on Etsy
Another great post about allowing yourself to be creative – here.
What tips do you have for making Pintrest work for you?
Lori says: I Love Pintrest - but you are right...you have to actually DO some of the things you pin for it to be of any use. on 04.10.12 @ 5:33 pm
